What is the Best Paper Weight and Type for Luxury Wedding Invitations?

Ballyseede Castle Letterpress Invitation Suite

When it comes to making a flawless first impression for your wedding, the texture and weight of your stationery speak volumes before your guests even read a single word. Mass-produced, commercial print papers often feel thin and flat. For true luxury wedding invitations—especially those using traditional artisan print methods—the secret lies entirely in choosing the right premium paper type and paper weight.

As a custom stationery designer crafting suites from my studio in the French Alps, I guide couples through these tactile choices every day. Here is the definitive guide to the exact premium papers and weights we use at Hello Snowflake Designs.

Our Signature Luxury Paper: Wild White 450gsm

While many traditional letterpress printers defaults to 100% cotton papers, we prefer a more refined, high-performance alternative. Our absolute favorite paper to print on is Wild White 450gsm.

This is a premium, high-cotton blend cardstock that offers the absolute best of both worlds. Because it contains a high percentage of cotton, it is incredibly soft and plush, allowing our antique letterpress and hot foil plates to bite deep into the surface for a breathtaking, tactile impression. However, because it isn’t fully cotton, it retains a crisp, luxurious structure and a beautifully subtle texture that pure cotton sheets often lack. It is the ultimate canvas for a modern, high-end wedding invitation.

Understanding Paper Weights: 300 GSM vs. 350 GSM

When browsing papers, you will constantly see the term GSM, which stands for Grams per Square Meter. This measures the weight and thickness of the cardstock. Aside from our signature 450gsm Wild White, we utilize two premium weights to build beautifully balanced invitation suites:

300 GSM: Elegant and Substantial

This is a beautiful, classic weight. It feels solid, substantial, and incredibly professional in your guests’ hands. We love using 300 GSM for the “insert cards” in your wedding suite—such as RSVP cards, guest information cards, and detail sheets—as well as your day-of stationery like menus, place cards, and ceremony booklets.

350 GSM: The Heavyweight Classic

Just a step up, 350 GSM offers that extra bit of luxurious rigidity. It is the perfect weight for a main invitation card if you are opting for beautiful hot foil stamping or crisp digital printing. It feels remarkably premium and stands up beautifully in transit.

Bespoke Stationery Tip: You don’t have to use the same paper weight for every single piece in your suite. A popular, high-end approach is to use our signature double-thick Wild White 450gsm for your main invitation card to make a massive impact, paired with coordinating 300 GSM or 350 GSM sheets for your detail cards and RSVP inserts.
